SOUTH BEND — The former treasurer of the Swanson Highland Community Pool in Clay Township has been charged with theft, accused of using the pool’s money for personal use, including plane tickets, a hotel room and purchases at Macy’s.
Amy Burris was charged Monday with one count of corrupt business influence, a Level 5 Felony, and four counts of theft, all misdemeanors.
In July 2017, the pool, which is open to members only and overseen by a board, abruptly closed temporarily because of insufficient money.
Many residents who had paid their pool membership for that year weren’t given details about the situation, nor information about when the pool might reopen. At the time, employees and swim coaches told the media they hadn’t been paid.
“This was a surprise to board members,” a probable cause affidavit against Burris, reads.
